Kick out the carbs

High protein diets have been proven to have a positive effect on weight loss goals by a shedload of researchers, so the idea that you can switch to a high protein diet for weight loss isn’t new. However, what you might not know is that you’ve got to scale back on low-fibre foods high in carbohydrates out of your diet to get the best results from a high protein food plan.

Protein is an excellent source of essential amino acids, which your body uses to build muscle and burn fat. Protein also digests slower than carbohydrate-rich foods, which leaves you feeling fuller for longer, helps to control your appetite, and also keeps your blood sugar much more stable than if you eat high-carb foods, so you’ll find it easy to stay on the high protein diet because you’re not nearly as hungry as you would be otherwise.

Keep an open mind

Many of dietary health professionals will sometimes caution their patients on adopting a high protein diet for weight loss because there are some risks that you need to keep in mind. However, as long as you diet properly you’re going to be in very little danger of any deleterious effects, but just to be safe, make sure you talk to a qualified dietitian before embarking on any new diet regime, regardless of what particular diet you choose.

If you do choose a high protein diet, you need to be made aware of certain things, such as the fact that because of the nature of high protein foods, you’re going to have to do your best to stay properly hydrated. Your body needs much more water to metabolise protein than it does for fats or carbohydrates, so unless you drink plenty of water in-between meals, you could run the risk of inadvertently dehydrating yourself, so make sure you keep your water bottle handy!

Other important things you should know about a high protein diet is that if you’re planning to use animal protein primarily, you need to be careful that you don’t consume meat that is too high in fat. Using lean meats such as turkey and chicken in lieu of beef is one option, while another excellent way to gain protein without eating too much saturated fat is to supplement with non-meat protein from sources such as vegetables and nuts – this has the added benefit of ensuring that your body receives higher levels of calcium, which can help to stave off osteoperosis.
