So you’ve got a little bundle of joy that you’ve brought into the world, and things are absolutely blissful – or at least they are as blissful as they can be, what with sleepless nights and a sore, woefully out of shape body. However, it’s not impossible to get your body back into shape after pregnancy and childbirth, but you need to do it properly to make sure you don’t jeopardise the health of both yourself and your new child!
patience, patience, patience
One of the most important things you need to learn right now is that you’re going to be in for a long, bumpy ride when it comes to getting your body back into some semblance of fitness after giving birth to a child. In fact, it’s one of the most difficult things you can do, though it does of course pale in comparison to raising a child, but if you can treat yourself with even half as much patience as you need to give you newborn child, you’ll be able to build the foundation you need in order to get yourself back on track.
It’s absolutely possible to get fit once more, but you’ll need to do it slowly and carefully to avoid risking your health or your child’s health. If you’re breastfeeding, medical experts say that you should take particular care to not push yourself too hard, as any physiological changes can affect your ability to nurse your child since changes to your diet are reflected in what nutrients are passed to the child through breast milk.
slow and steady wins the race
You’ll lose some weight just from giving birth and then a bit more over the next few days as your body adjusts to giving birth to your child, but it’s quite common to suffer from weight gain over the course of a pregnancy, so your best bet is to focus on steady but gradual weight loss over the course of several months. The best way to lose weight steadily and safely is to focus on good quality nutrition as recommended by your doctor, combined with low impact exercise that you can do without putting even more strain on your body than it has already gone through thanks to childbirth and continues to go through as you provide nearly constant care for your newborn child.
Always consult your doctor before engaging in any sort of diet or exercise regime shortly after a pregnancy or childbirth, as the health of your young son or daughter needs to be your primary concern. That being said, it’s far from impossible to get yourself back to your old fighting weight – or even with better overall health than you had before you became pregnant, though it’s going to take more than a bit of hard work!
